Ruined Wings: Severed Flames Book 1 Author Annie Anderson
Book Review
5 out of 5 stars!
"This was the difference between the witch in front of me and all the others who’d come before her. In the face of death, she screamed, not in fright but in rage, and not backing down an inch. Honestly, I was a little impressed." - Kian
Perder Lucem's a magic hating guild full of magic hunters. Vale and her sister are trapped within the guild as mindless grunt workers. Only neither sister is mindless, and Vale has been doing something the guild hoped to ensure no one would have time for. Thinking. She has plans to escape with her sister, but they should have already done so yesterday! Vale's magic threatens to reveal itself more and more each day and if it does. . .it's all over.
Only when saving her sister or allowing something utterly unspeakable to happen to her, Vale's plans go out the door! Being fine with sacrificing herself for her sister's life Vale hopes the end will be swift. Fate having other plans for Vale in the shape of three dragons and a curse. Dragons are nothing but cruel blood thirsty monsters, right? How can she possibly end an old curse? Did her sister escape? And since when were dragons able to shift into hot humans?!
"Kian was a dragon. The dragon was Kian. Kian was a dragon. Dragons were people." - Vale
First book in a new series by an author I adore! The dedication alone would make any "early 2000s girlie" instantly snatch up this read! I am very much not over the PTSD of love triangles! So now a lot of my romance reads are why choose, because with so many amazing authors writing up all these book boyfriends, I CANNOT choose one. Okay, onto the review and off the soapbox!
Vale is such a strong, badass woman I just can't! I loved her instantly and the bond with her just grew the more I read. Being able to relate to her through trauma and taking small steps to healing said trauma. Even if she didn't realize it. Vale going from a situation where survival was the only thing she ever knew to being able to breathe. Receiving the basic necessities of being alive that were deemed "luxuries" back at the guild. . . Food being one of the major ones.
Some of the scenes or understandings of what happened within the guild may be rough for some readers. Vale had to endure a lot, and I respect the fact that she doesn't just get instantly cured by the love interests. Them even realizing she needed to do certain things for herself, forgetting them and the curse.
All three of the MMCs are book boyfriends for sure! One of them I feel will develop more as the series continues. Kian and Xavier were instantly my loves! I enjoyed their banter with one another and how they balanced the other out. They both have a duty to fulfill but neither can go through with it after meeting Vale! I loved the dialogue between them the first night at the inn with Vale nearby. They're both used to how things normally go with the witches they retrieve but neither was prepared for Vale. Vale shaking things up from the get-go without even realizing it. Several scenes I was laughing at and cheering for my girl!
This book has some darkness to it. Both Vale's life and what the MMCs have had to go through as they try and break the curse. Violence, bloodshed, several close calls with death, nightmares, feelings of helplessness, and more. Language is prominent through the book along with intense emotions. There's an attempted SA scene with a side character who is a minor. But things were shut down and stopped.
"When he’d said he wanted me to sit on his face, he’d actually meant it. I tried not to rest my weight on him fully, but Xavier pulled me down, lapping at my slit like a man starved." - Vale
Xavier. . .whew! Xavier will make your heart swell and your toes curl all at the same time. I loved how each guy developed or is developing things with Vale at their paces. Not all of them are instantly on board with sharing Vale or being team Vale, different burn rates. There's a lot of sexual tension and attraction. The multiple POVs help show this and just how hard two of them are trying to stay focused on their duties to the crown. . . Vale is a total virgin to it all, the guys having no problem showing her how to feel good and embrace it. "Good little witch", "Good girl", Doms, biting, and so much more. We get some MFM action and full MF action.
I just have to say Rune is my favorite character and the bestest dragon around! Love how he has this thing about perching on turrets like an overgrown bird! I really cannot wait for more of this series because CLIFFHANGER! I enjoy figuring things out before it was stated aloud, being surprised by some twists, and having my theories for the coming books.
Do enjoy the read with dragon shifters, a two-hundred-year-old curse, and an FMC who has a strong mind of her own! Don't forget to give the author some stars!
