Shroom For Improvement: Mythical Mishaps Book 1 Author Jemma Croft

Book Review

5 out of 5 stars!

"Phallus Impudicus.  . . . Translated, it literally meant "shamelessly phallic". And boy, did the original architects of Stinkhorn Manor go to town with that design concept." - Claude

Claude's a very simple Mushroom Fae with a simple life and lowkey goals. There's nothing really grand and extravagant about him or his life and he likes it that way. . . Until the news of his absent father's death comes then everything flips on its head!

Claude inherits a manor! One that is magical and notorious for being a giant pain in the rear. Only there's a small little catch. . .Claude has to perform a ritual twice a year. A secret ritual that no one can talk about, but he must perform in order to save Stinkhorn Manor itself and all of its current residents! Did someone fail to mention to the powers that be that Claude can hardly do magic?! He needs help but where does one even begin to look for help regarding this crisis!?

"You need my help, and I need your help, for basically the same thing. And neither one of us can help the other." - Sonny

I've read from Jemma before and was given a heads up about the amount of silliness that would be in this book. I was not disappointed! I laughed so much with this read and respected the fact that even though this was an absurd comedy the plotline was serious and very much a big deal. I figured things out pretty quickly but wanted to watch the MMCs finally get it. Let me tell you. . .it takes them a bit to finally take the hints! But the journey to those moments was fantastic!

Sonny Daye could be the solution to all of Claude's problems or the beginning of new ones. I mean the Magpie Fae is very attractive but no! We mustn't focus on his dark hair, tall lean build, nerdiness, and. . .I lost the plot. In a turn of events Claude invites Sonny to the Manor. The Mycology Professor is over the moon when he sets foot on the grounds and sees all the life, vegetation, and most importantly the mushrooms! But both of them are having trouble figuring out the clues surrounding the secret ritual!

I loved the chemistry and dynamic between the two fae! Sonny's appearance is very much grumpy but instead he's our big golden retriever sunshine! While Claude is our grump who's given Sonny the cold shoulder for literal years! Loved all the no communication and miscommunication moments that happened within this read. Watching Sonny bring Claude out of his shell discovering the serious shroom fae had a fun side and a sense of humor. The main focus of the story leans more to the plotline of the ritual and saving the Manor. Claude unsure if he even wants to keep said Manor.

"Amor sui vitas salvat" the house's (Jenny's) motto translated to "self-love saves lives"

I should honestly just scrap this entire review and just write about Jenny! This may be a spoiler, but I just love Jenny's character so much! You can skip this paragraph if you wish to. Jenny's the house and is able to communicate with certain people. The banter it brought to the book was amazing! And how Jenny used its magical abilities to help or hinder situations! Let me just say no matter what she says about John I feel like they are besties and give each other the newest tea. John's another favorite of mine. Oh, and the dynamic between Mrs Z and Mr Dupont!

Usually, I just glance over TWs and keep going but with Jemma I had to read every one of them! Her little in-depth descriptions of each TW had me laughing, some more than others. This book does have language because why not. I normally go into what to expect in reads but honestly, I really think you should read the authors list! This read does stay on the lighter side of things but there are some moments. You will be laughing a lot with this book. Jemma also provides a map at the beginning!

"I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me." - Claude

"Sonny did, about two hours ago." - Jenny

The romance plotline isn't the main focus and it's proven with the slow burn! Mutual attraction/pinning and so much sexual attraction! There's an abstinence-self-love-pact, Claude worried about the age gap between Sonny and him, trying to think about things rationally, and more. Jenny forces a one bed trope on the two, literally it takes away all other sleeping options but the one bed! Dual POVs to give new perspectives on the wild chaos and trying to solve the mystery. We do get spicy MM action, Dom/sub play, light bondage, aftercare, and more.

I want to go on, but I am probably at a rather lengthy review already. This book had so much in it, and I loved every moment of it. It has a very HEA and I hope to see more of the side characters in books to come of this series. This was such an amazing installment and I'm very happy I got the opportunity to read it! Cannot wait for more from this author! I also need to go back and read her other works!

Enjoy the read with mushroom architecture, mushroom puns, mushroom innuendos, mushroom lessons, and more mushrooms! While two fea try and figure out the answer to a ritual. Don't forget to give the author some stars!
