Only someone else on Halloween has other plans for Jet's life. Her big break comes but not in the way she anticipated. . . Somehow, she survives a brutal attack and fatal head injury but for what? She has seven days before an aneurysm finishes what the murderer tried and failed to do in the moment. Jet has no more laters, only now! She will solve her own murder before the clock stops with a little help from her childhood best friend.

This is my first read from this author and I can see now why "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" blew up the way it did if it's anything like this read! At my local Target again, I saw this book and flipped it over to read the premise. Was instantly hooked and thought the concept was really unique! Read a few pages and somehow, I was already at home with a newly purchased suspense thriller! Fast paced all the way to the end!
Jet is not your typical FMC. Very much a smartass, procrastinator, and not the best person to be around. Always ready to start a fight or defend herself against others. She's a character who grows on you throughout the read as you fit the puzzle together. Understanding how her personality came to be and that her family aren't really saints or deserving of gold stars. I loved her wit and sharp tongue. Her dialogue or some internal monologue helped bring light and laughter to a dark read.
I want to give a loud applause to the author for doing her research! The scenes with the doctor, diagnosing Jet, and how Jet looked after the attack were fantastic. It felt very real and honestly some of the scenes made me queasy. None of this major injury and then instantly fine stuff in this book. You could feel and understand Jet's pain and struggles as she stuck to her goal no matter what. Most people would do crazy bucket list things and spend every dollar they had but instead Jet is like "nah, I'm going catch my killer!"
Jet curses worse than a sailor and I love it! My girl! So, language in this read but it isn't just limited to her. Violence, bloodshed, gore, death?, and medical diagnosis that are a bit horrific in a way. Mention of past stories involving suicide and a tragic accident that led to death. Some scariness with pills, discussion of a kidney disease (PKD), and some of the things you have to deal with when having it. Blackmail, secrets, police chase, and more! The looming threat and guarantee of death along with signs of deteriorating.

There is romance in this book but not in the typical way. Childhood friends finally reconnecting and picking up where they left off with hints of adult romance. But with this read we get the rawness of a relationship. Seeing someone at their worst and still wrapping them in a warm hug and kissing the top of their head. Putting aside your own feelings and thoughts to support the other. There were intimate moments but of genuine, unconditional love, and comfort. A lot of healing and growth in this book in an odd way.
I really want to state something I loved from this author that you don't see with most reads. But it'd be a spoiler! Just one of the ending sequences had me! We do get conclusions and I was wrong about the twist! Jackson did a great job misdirecting you until the very end when she raised the curtain! The acknowledgement from the author had me laughing through my tears! She definitely understood what she was doing to her readers, but also herself because these are her characters. Yes, this book had me crying because damn the emotional twists and heartbreaks! Cannot wait for another read!
Enjoy a book that focuses on what's most important when all else is stripped away and the clock is practically at zero. And don't forget to give the author some stars!
