Remember that awkward stage of transitioning from a child into a teenager? Puberty? All the added hormones and feeling like you were changing but not quite sure how to? Welcome to Rome's drama only add a little extra because he's not strictly a human. . . After following the weird, quite kid's instructions Rome's world is about to turn even more on its head!

Growing up is hard enough but now Rome has to factor in the possibility that he's a dragon!? Julian and Rome are about to form an unlikely friendship and maybe complete an ancient bond that hasn't been done for many years. They have been finding clues about portals around their small town and Julian has been training dutifully since forever to become a knight of old! Please, say this is all just a big DND Larping experience?!

This was a very fun YA (young adult) read! We've all gone through puberty and know how it is, the struggles, odd emotions, feelings of your arms or legs being too long for your body, etc. Rome's trying to understand it all, but he quickly realizes some of the things he's experiencing isn't normal. Luckily, he has someone who understands and can help him, though Rome's very hesitant.

I loved the dynamic between Julian and Rome! The comedy the two brought out of one another and the clever banter. Julian's not fully in Rome's circle of friends and is well known for being the odd man out. But as the two get to know each other more Rome's feelings and understanding for his new friend change. They quickly bond with one another and form a close friendship!

The author did an excellent job conveying the feelings of "is this really real or just a big joke?". There's an older mentor who's helping the boys but at first you are on Rome's side about things. Especially considering Julian and the circumstances surrounding the mentor. With the mentor I got vibes from "Big Hero 6" and how Fred's butler acted, respectful but very helpful and encouraging. You really can't judge a book by its cover.

There are so many cool intricacies within the read and a lot of fantasy. I don't want to give anything away, but I loved the approach on history and situations! Also, frying pans are hands down the best fantasy weapon out there, prove me wrong! I've seen similarities with Julian's powers before in other sources and I really love the concept, was happy to see it brought forth in this book. Helped to add more comedy to interactions and impact a twist in the book!

This is a YA fantasy read and it's very clean. There's no language and the fights that take place would be Disney approved! No gore. Julian does have a moment where he turns to curse words, but they are bleeped out. Thoroughly enjoyed the scene and how an item was tested for the authenticity. . . With the duo POVs we do get to understand things from both boys' perspectives, the POVs are in third person. There is an understanding of fear and how it can take over your body and some feelings of anxiousness.

I really loved this YA and I love authors who reach out about their works. Finding young adult reads that even as an adult you can thoroughly enjoy, feel different emotions, and laugh out loud to. This book is not just for teenagers, and I am very excited to read the next installment of the series! The book does end on a gentle cliffhanger, but you know there's more to come. The boys have just started their adventure together!
