Erika Turnbull has an opportunity of a lifetime fall into her lap! A chance to prove to her small-town that she's worth something and to possibly line up career opportunities for the future! Bonus points that her boss is hot even though he's about to marry a different woman. But she can be an adult about this and not get in the way. She will be the best assistant possible and succeed in helping her employers win first place on To the Manor Build!
Kim however can tell something is up and her momma intuition is pinging! Especially after attending the wedding of Holly and Robert upon the couple going missing shortly after. She refuses to allow the town and a cop with a grudge against Erika to bury her daughter under rumors and false accusations. But will Kim be able to help her daughter before things are too late? Especially since Erika is trying to be independent and not letting Kim in on everything going on.
This was a fun read, and I have to say the psychological part is a little more subtle than most I've read. It really hits hard if you relisten to the audiobook. You pick up on how quickly things had been taking place/set up and it is crazy! I think that's my new favorite thing now, listening and then immediately relistening before reviewing thrillers! The way things were woven together and being seen one way until you know all the answers.
I did like Erika's POV, and I didn't catch onto things until it was too late much like Erika. Was invested in how she was trying to prove to everyone that she was not a screw up. A past accident haunting her and trying to set her lot in life in stone. Her love-crush obsession with Robert is highlighted but I respect the fact that she didn't try and sabotage things for her employers. She truly was a good assistant and dedicated even if she may have had puppy dog eyes at times. I think relistening to the audiobook also helped shed a new light on some scenes.
Kim, Dorian, and the hellcat that is Tammy I absolutely adored! Seeing how they teamed up to keep Erika out of jail and try to figure out the nightmare going on. Showcasing parents worries and worst fears coming to light in this read. I appreciated how parents were not blind to their children or their children's personality tendencies. Admitting to things about their children or even themselves. Lotta humbling moments in this read for various things along with maternal instincts and protectiveness. Tammy dressing down some people was fantastic! Just the different combination of personalities between the three and how they blended together. Enjoyed the dual POVs of Kim and Erika!
We do have language with this read. Some ins and outs of property and owning it or buying it out from others. Aftermath of former owners having their house sold. Feelings of genuine fear, anxiety, pressures, helplessness, and more. Violence, bloodshed, deaths, two past tragedies brought up, small-town cop with a grudge and a badge, cruelness of online keyboard warriors, mental health, NDAs, reality TV harshness, and manipulations.
I honestly liked this read and the throw ins of blog posts and Reddit chats. How people were easily swayed by what they saw or heard. Whether it was to be for or against the content that was put out. I didn't guess all the twists before they happened and just the voice acting in this book was awesome! The cast did such a phenomenal job bringing everyone's personalities to life! From the spitfire, wildness of Tammy to the calmer energy of Dorian. The mother-daughter duo was fun and seeing how their dynamic worked. Erika even had horror moments of realizing she was turning into her mother! Also, loved the property solicitors especially at the end, they helped provide some small bouts of comedy throughout the read. We do get conclusions and some HEAs!
Do enjoy this read and don't forget to give the author some stars!
Thank you, Libby!
