Murder at Spindle Manor: The Lamplight Murder Mysteries, Book 1 Author Morgan Stang

Audiobook Review!

5 out of 5 stars!

Narrator: Shiromi Arserio

Ms Isabeau Agarwal has come to the end of her hunt having finally cornered her quarry! But she won't have an easy time this night because of the unruly storm, the quaint countryside inn itself, and the guests who reside within. Life is never simple and certainly not for a Huntress of supernatural monsters.

She must find out whom amongst the guests is the liar. Her quarry being a monster who can wear its victim's skin and mimic the person exactly! To round out the already tense night a murder occurs dragging the Huntress into a whodunit. But maybe in solving the murder mystery she will unmask her beast. The clock is ticking down, and insurances have already been put in place if Isabeau fails her hunt before dawn. . .

I unfortunately do not have any cool quotes from the read. When I listen to audiobooks I'm usually cooking and unable to stop and write down quotes from the read. I was browsing Libby looking for another cool audiobook when I stumbled across this mystery. I was hooked from the moment I heard the narrator's voice and the writing style!

Isabeau's a serious woman who wishes to give nothing away and complete every hunt she takes on. There's dry humour to her that I love and appreciate! Her independence and matter of fact attitude screamed black cat energy. I was also laughing at how Evie, her temporary coachman, helped to balance the Huntress out much to her dismay. The two being an unlikely duo since Isabeau's used to doing everything by herself.

This read was so immersive! It had so many themes that I have come to love over my reading journey! We have supernatural elements, steampunk vibes, a murder mystery, secluded destination, and more! I think a reviewer used "gothic gaslamp" to define this read and I'm finding I love this genre a lot!

The book reminded me of the movie "Clue" with Eldritch horror elements. How Isabeau had an audience for every step of the murder and a gaggle of people following her about. I appreciated the world building and how it flowed within the story and around characters. Not being randomly dumped and going on and on. The book remained fast paced and every chapter was so fascinating! I was right there with Evie trying to put pieces together before the ending but not fully reaching it in time!

This book does contain some detailed body horror that may be a little unsettling. It isn't gory and stomach rolling but still Eldritch monster. There's violence, bloodshed, and deaths. Language is limited but present especially around a certain character who's also a bit crude. A sad ghost story, a war hero who's a bit intense, suspicions of cruelty toward another, a cruel socialite, and if you have Arachnophobia some of the book may be extra nerve-wracking for you.

One of my favorite characters was Penny, a living doll girl! I was fascinated by her and how Isabeau could interpret her even if Penny was incapable of emotions or speech. I just really loved all aspects of this read and I ended up listening to it again right after hearing it once! We do get a conclusion and HEA but there's more to come in this series for Isabeau and others! Much to my delight Libby has the next installment!

Really loved the narrator and her voice! Bringing to life the characters and keeping my mind engaged. Also, also! Loved how there was a chapter thirteen but Isabeau/the author did something funny with it!

Anyways, I must stop and listen to the next book! Do enjoy this read however you may do it and don't forget to give the author some stars!
