Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! Vol. 1 Manga by Chika Mizube

Manga Review

5 out of 5 stars!

Manga by Chika Mizube

Story by Kanata Hoshi

Character Design by Peperon

"The young lady who eats monsters. . . The Voracious Villainess."

Melphiera would like nothing more than to continue studying monsters and creating fancy dishes with the meat. But her stepmother gave her an ultimatum she cannot ignore. She must find a match and be betrothed within a year!? Though in "proper" high society Melphiera is shunned and no suitor wishes to approach her.

Will she get a proposal of marriage, or will she suffer the consequences of her stepmother? She's just a woman who knows what she wants and has gained the knowledge of how to properly prepare it! And because she is an upstanding lady, she wishes for the finer dishes with gorgeous presentation on the plate!

"Really? You're not worried about touching monster blood?" - Duke Aristide

"Oh, not at all. You should've seen me last week when I butchered a Backhorn. This is nothing." - Melphiera

I saw this pop up on NetGalley and after reading the premise I was hooked, I mean the title and the cover already had me! I have to state that Laios Touden from "Delicious in Dungeon" would be best friends with Melphiera!

"Delicious in Dungeon" has that "I have to do this to survive" factor while in this manga there isn't one. There's no shortage of resources or being forced to remain within a certain space, though Laios would probably being doing exactly what Melphiera does! There are hints that she has an important reason for eating monsters and someone placed her on this path but in this first installment it remains a mystery.

I loved seeing Melphiera passionately talk about her hobby. That bright and bubbly personality exploding out as she goes into detail. Her flavor of autism comes with perks of eating full course meals! When Aristide entered the scene and started talking to her, I knew where this was going to go! He's definitely the one for her! Don't even care if it's a slow burn between them! Could relate to her feelings and finding someone who was genuinely interested in listening to her and processing what she was saying!

I didn't catch any language with this read. So far, this manga stays on the lighter side of things with comedy and a meet cute. There are tones of heavier things because of how proper society views things that are not "normal". Rumors and whispered gossip, reading body language and feeling the weight of other's emotions, and waiting for the inevitable disappointment/disgust. These moments are not heavily focused on because there's too many other happier and chaotic things happening! Some violence and blood but nothing gory or detailed out!

"The Duke is a late bloomer, but it seems spring has finally arrived." - Kauss

Kauss was one of my favorite characters! He's hard on the Duke but he can also see what's happening even if he's still stunned by how well Melphiera and Aristid are getting on. I love this story so much and I had to get the next volume because that cliffhanger is a doozy! Will have to also dive into the Anime for this series! The artwork is gorgeous, and I loved the panels that showed Melphiera's soft beauty in contrast to the harsh skeletons of monsters. The Duke is also very handsome and I loved the look in his eyes for Melphiera while she's enjoying monster cuisine!

Do enjoy the manga with Regency Era society, a young woman who eats monsters, and a Duke who hunts monsters! Don't forget to give the team of this manga some stars!

Thank you, Kodansha Comics and NetGalley!
