An Intimate Excerpt from the Diary of Our Lady: Including an Account of Her Captivity Under Orcus, God of Death (Shades of Sanctuary) Author Kass O'Shire
Book Review
4 out of 5 stars!
"You don't fix things by running away like the spoiled princess you were when you created this world. You fix them by making it right." - Orcus
Orcus was designed to be The Lady's perfect villain. Thwarting her plans, playing games with her through their respected people, losing when the situation called for it, etc. When they spoke in person, he would call her princess and not address her by the title of Goddess or otherwise. Enjoyed getting under her skin as his obsession for her grew. Orcus was content with being within his own shadows and not overstepping or telling her how he felt.
Until The Lady announces she's going to go into a long slumber. He sees how damaging that would be to the world she created. Sleeping away a problem isn't going to fix it or guarantee the person will learn their lesson. Orcus decides to take matters into his own hands and ensure The Lady will grow from this bump in the road. He first needs to get her to agree to his punishment and rehabilitation. Maybe he will confess his truth to her while she is within his dominion.
"You wanted a good story. . .and every good story needs a villain." - Orcus
I unfortunately haven't read any of the other novellas within this world setting. But now I need to go back and read them! I loved the author's note for this diary before digging into the excerpts. As I read through the story and looked at Sirin's notes I chuckled. I could only imagine Sirin clutching their pearls a couple of times with some of the scenes or how Orcus addressed The Lady.
The writing of this novella was interesting. I was appreciative of how these were excerpts from a diary but felt more story like than the usual "dear diary today, I. . .". We get insight into The Lady and how she was just thought into existence and then left alone. No mentor or teacher or anything. With all this power she created a world to try and be like the "big kids". Thus, mistakes were made but also a lot of good. I mean for someone with no previous training I think she did a wonderful job!
I loved Orcus a lot! How The Lady created him and gave him freewill. Therefore, the scoundrel he is broke the mold and changed some things up! He used his experiences and things that helped to humble him on The Lady. I laughed at the times The Lady seemed more villainous than the actual villain she created! Believing they were still playing games, and she figured out his dastardly plans before they came to fruition. She was wrong in the best ways!
This is a lighthearted novella! There's some language throughout. Feelings that the world would be a better place without her in it (not suicidal!) because of all the mistakes that transpired. Feelings of inadequacy, sadness, and more. Things stay on the lighter end of the scale.
"Once I saw the cracks--in you, in my logic---they were all I could see. . .and they were beautiful." - Orcus
I felt like The Lady was a micro manager but with a bunch of toddlers who couldn't be left alone for a second! She's been well past due in for a long vacation! Orcus not telling her that this "atonement period" is one for rest and reflection. The chemistry between the two was great and had already been building for a long time! I really loved Orcus and the little tasks he gave the goddess. We do get spicy scenes, and this man knows how to tease and edge! Taking control from The Lady and helping her to safely be able to submit. Utilizing his shadowy tentacles to the max and hearing no complaints from the goddess. Well, maybe one. When he walks away leaving her wanting more!
We get an HFN (happy for now)! I loved the conclusion of their story and have more incentive to read the other novellas! I don't think this book will ruin/spoil anything for the others. I need to just take a month and read all the other installments. Love Kass's writing and I want to read more from her. I'm also interested in seeing if Sirin pops up in any of the other stories!
Do enjoy the novella with a Goddess who just needed a break and a Death God who wishes to privately worship her! And don't forget to give the author some stars!
