5 out of 5 stars!
Alice decided the best birthday present for her partner Joe was a baby! Though to be fair she didn't plan on that or even imagine she would be pregnant at thirty. Maybe a little later. Nevertheless, the baby is coming and like most soon-to-be-parents the chaotic city is no place to raise a child. Penton seems like the ideal place to peacefully and safely raise their first born. There're also natural remedy practices, hippies, and environmentally conscious residents of this small town.
Everything would have been picturesque if it wasn't for the murder. The sleepy town is about to be shaken awake by this case unfolding. Being a prime suspect Alice and her new-found, expectant mums decide to do a little investigating themselves. All on maternity leave or otherwise they have nothing to do but wait for their due dates. So why not be like Mrs. Marple? All those sleepless, crime binging nights are about to pay off, hopefully.
I love my audiobooks but I'm awful at jotting down cool quotes! Also, I apologize in advance if any names are misspelled! I listened to the sample of this audio and instantly knew that I needed to listen to this book! I love this take on amateur sleuthing while also trying to juggle being pregnant! The trails that come with having a massive belly and on the final hurtle of nine months. Number one rule: always carry an ample number of snacks!
I think I'm going to finally be honest with myself. If I was in a smalltown and a murder happened, I'd be guilty of trying to solve it. Alice's mind instantly starts cataloging things before she even realizes it. Penton's already a mystery to her and Joe, both struggling to fit in. A place where big name brand items are frowned upon especially medicines. Don't even get them started on Alice's trips to the clown's to get her greasy, salty fries. Alice isn't the only one who's brain is going into overdrive to memorize things.
I enjoyed Alice and how she balanced environmentally conscious but also, "I want to enjoy what I love". There were so many comical moments, and this read was very relaxing. I enjoyed listening to Kitty's voice and how she brought Alice to life. I respected the down-to-earth moments and realities of being pregnant that social media or anything else for that matter really doesn't want to go into. Helen was a favorite character and I'm very certain that Alice and Helen are very much alike. Helen being a very beautiful dog but blessed with the brain of a pea.
This is a cozy smalltown mystery with some great humor! Single POV from Alice's perspective. Language is present along with some very intimate details of pregnancy and the not so beautiful side of things. An on-page birth happens pretty quickly, and the setting is not in a hospital. There is some natural birthing options discussed along with odd traditions/practices concerning placentas. I understand the idea behind things, but modern mindsets are much different. The scene was hilarious though. Murder, mysteries, secrets, deaths, and a scary incident regarding Helen. I promise that Helen is okay!!
There's romance but not your typical romance a more raw and real relationship. Alice and Joe are trying to come to terms with their ever-approaching reality. There are some pitfalls, arguments, concerns, and fears. Also, the two just had a major move to a new place, her due date is a few weeks away, and they're sharing an air mattress with a dog! Anyone would be a little grumpy and stressed. Both processing things in their own way about being new parents but Joe's is being quiet and a little distant. Though this man is protective of Alice and his unborn son!
I loved the diverse mum group! I adore Poppy and I think Elsa and I would get along! I'm right there with Alice in thinking that Hen's a bit intimidating. I liked that this group of women were able to lean on one another and show their help and support in different ways. The dynamics being unique, everyone not instantly bonding/loving the others, and authenticity of when a group of different viewpoints collide. But they all needed each other for an HEA to come about. Some conclusions not being happy because that's life. I'm currently listening to the next read in this series and loving it!
Enjoy the group of mums whose intuitions are leveling up and not just for their little ones. Don't forget to give the author some stars!
