Audiobook Review

Narrator Laura Edwards

5 out of 5 stars!

Have you ever messed up so badly that you just need to get on a plane and leave it all behind? Well, Carina does just that! It's time to move forward and wipe the slate clean. What better place than Jamaica! Being part Jamaican, Carina wishes to reconnect with her roots and see all the things her mother talked about.

Carina is to be a nanny for the Hall family. A prominent and political family on the island who run a tight ship within Blackbead manor. Carina's fine with this because she wants this change and needs it! But something is haunting her and causing issues. Could her past be catching up to her? Did she truly think she could escape? Is this thing a piece of someone else's past?  Maybe with the help of some newfound friends she will be able to get to the bottom of things before it's too late.

I was surfing through Libby trying to find my next read when I found this book. I loved the narrator's voice and how she brought Ora and the others to life! With the wonderful, thick and rich accents and being able to be submerged into the culture! I loved all of it and was glad I picked this audiobook up!

I could relate to Carina a lot with how she just needed a break. Being able to hop on a plane and go somewhere amazing! Even if she may have fibbed a bit to get to where she is. . . I loved seeing through her eyes and how she experienced things. Getting to see the deeper roots of her Jamaican side and some of the culture shock moments were funny! Watching as she navigated new relationships and friendships while trying to also keep some distance. Loved how she matured more by the end of the book!

The mystery was so much fun and trying to guess how things were going to end! Going from a simple ghost mystery to potentially an old murder!? Having supernatural twists and seeing visions of a duppy through Carina's POV! The different viewpoints on ghosts and how America treats theirs vs Jamaica. It's true that a lot of people tend to play with ghosts and supernatural entities in the States. I will never, ever own a Ouija board because of the consequences surrounding them that people don't fully understand. Meanwhile in Jamaica they respect and fear their duppies. When I listen to audiobooks it's hard to snag a quote but there is one about the above!

This is a YA book. We do have language throughout the book along with some violence. Grief of losing a best friend, anxiety and panic attacks. Secrets and lies, a very strict/older generation parenting mentality, hard slap on the cheek for a side character, deaths, mention of a car wreck. Teen parties with drugs and alcohol, along with implied underage sex. Nothing detailed out on page.

We do get romance with this read. Slow burn and there are some complications along the way while tension was building up! A passionate MF moment but nothing over PG13. I did respect Carina's decision on things and why she did choose what she did with this new flame. The ending for them was so sweet and I'm excited for them!

Ora was so much fun, and it would be interesting to be around her. (Sorry if spelling is incorrect! Without visually seeing a name I don't know how the author spelled it.) Though I will say she would wear me out before the day was even over. Pretty sure she has ADHD or she's just that full of life! Loved the ins and the outs of the Young Birds and how situations turned out! The found family aspect was there and one that isn't perfect or will be hunky-dory all the time. Much like a real family. HEA for story! I really hope this author continues writing because I would love to listen to another story!

Enjoy the read however you may acquire it! Don't forget to give the author some stars! This read has me wanting to visit Jamaica sometime! Though I will be bringing a whole suitcase of sunscreen because I'm very pale!
