Book Review

4 out of 5 stars!

ARC Review (Release Date 3/14/25)

"This is the main difference. Shifters can shift whenever they like and stay shifted for however long they like. Were don't get that choice." - Cian

Cian's been in love with Mash Cassidy since the moment the two met fifteen years ago. He's been content with just being close friends and keeping his one-sided love, but how much longer can he hold on? When Mash can no longer avoid his family and the plans of his Alpha, who won't take no for an answer, an idea forms. Mash and Cian will be fake mates!

They're best friends who have lived together before, what's a couple of months? Cian can openly show love and affection to Mash, but will his heart come out unscathed when this all ends? Mash is straight and adamant that there won't be any worries of feelings developing or attachments. Just pretend for a little bit more. Has our hipster shifter found the limits of the lengths he'd go for Mash? And can the two possibly fool several packs of werewolves?!

"Avoiding my calling was my calling." - Mash

I was excited for this book! A wolf shifter and a werewolf pairing had my interest piqued! Now as it is stated multiple times in and out of the book, this is not an Omega verse read! I enjoyed getting to see different worlds coming together and how much the two differed from one another. In-depth explanations being present in the read other than just the "it's a were thing".

Cian's small world opened up big time when he met Mash! Cian was raised by rich snobs who had to keep up with the neighbors. He hates to admit it but can't deny it either especially when Mash starts pulling him out of his shell. Cian treasures his friendship with Mash more than anything in the world.

Mash has been running from his Alpha and family for a while. Dodging the requests and obligations like a pro up until now. This Harvest Fest is going to be a big one with many changes and Mash cannot weasel his way out of it! Alpha wants him to mate up and become a family man. Mash would rather die! So, a lie forms that turns into a feasible plan involving Cian. Everything will be perfect!

"But you wouldn't let me come to the shifting park again." - Cian

"Because you threw the fucking stick! You had thirty werewolves playing fetch all fucking night." - Mash

I enjoyed the two very much and their dynamic. The comedy that came out when two different up brings and instincts collided. Dual POVs. Were's being more primal and directly connected to their wolf instincts. Whilst shifters are like "oh hey, I can shift into a wolf! That's really cool.". The wolf instincts are there but not up in their face and having to obey them. The amount of miscommunication between these two idiots is insane! I loved the tension between the two and how their friendship was really being tested throughout this book.

Do read through the CWs. This book does contain language, a lot of primal wolf like behavior, college party animal and the aftermath of going too hard, and more. Scenting is a big thing with werewolves and so be ready for some bum sniffing and marking with golden showers. I was in agreeance with Cian when he started learning about the grossness of old were traditions. There's a first POV of a werewolf shifting for the very first time, a scene with a panic attack, and feelings of finality.

Unrequited, best friends to fake lovers to possibly real lovers' romance. Whew what a mouthful! This is a slow burn romance with the two trying to understand each other and themselves! Both have been equally running away from things and not acknowledging things. My brain short-circuited with a few of the kinky scenes. Namely the reason behind Cian's want to shift into a wolf. MM action, fun dynamics with who is actually the top, "good boy", forced proximity, "oh no! Only one bed", and so much more!

This is my honest and personal opinion! For me I felt like some of the flashback chapters weren't necessary. Something would be said within the "Present Day" chapter and then we would spend a new chapter going back in time to really detail out whatever was brought up. Again, personal opinion! I wanted to continue moving forward with the present-day timeline. Flashbacks are fun but when it has already been semi explained what previously happened or what was said I wish to move on. I wanted to find out if the two would ever fully and openly communicate!

Interconnected world but the books can be read out of order. HEA for the main couple! I like Jemma's writing and the comedy she brings with her characters.

Do enjoy the read with culture shock moments, tail thumps, and a wolf shifter trying to blend into a sea of werewolves! And don't forget to give the author some stars!
