Bad River Author Ken Brosky
Book Review
5 out of 5 stars!
Set to release tomorrow! (July 31, 2024)
"You're gonna die on this farm."
First line of the book and words that haunt Eli Nelson's mind on a daily basis. Eli's trying to stay above water but with a large debt hanging over his head he may as well be a drowned man! He needs a lucky break not a dead cow that could add on more numbers to the debt.
Only this cow wasn't killed by the normal predators that take up residence around the small town. With the help of a Professor Mackenzie from the local university the mystery may be solved. Or are the rumors and town history of supernatural happenings actually true? Is it the famed "Beast of Bray Road"?! Eli's skill sets didn't include fighting monsters!
"Survival and cruelty sometimes go hand-in-hand." - Mackenzie
This is my second read from this author, and I loved it! I enjoy the writing style and how it may seem to start out slow, but you find yourself already halfway through the book and wanting to know what's behind the mystery! I mean we have to set the stage and understand the character's I just get surprised when I've been so into reading and figuring out everyone that the books almost over!
I fell in love with Eli pretty quickly! The more that was revealed about his nature the more I was like he must be protected at all costs! With this read we get to see into the not so glamourous side of being a farm owner and raising animals. Eli having inherited the farm he's been a part of since the day he was born. Only now he's balancing a fine line of bankruptcy and ruin.
When you hear the word survival many think of those shows were someone is dumped in the woods with a pack and told to try and tough it out. Or situations where someone is having to defend themselves against a very scary threat. But survival is versatile and can be used to describe someone who's just trying to make ends meet and keep it all together. Eli knowing his big heart isn't helping matters but the calves are his babies, and he refuses to cut corners! (I'd be the same way! You can also hug a cow intensely and not have to worry about hurting them!)
I was glad to have multiple POVs, in third person, to see how everyone was handling the sudden kill of the cow. The mystery just growing as you try and figure out for yourself what's behind the murder. I love horror and dark reads but not teenage slasher style with no rhyme or reason other than just pure violence. I think I caught onto the deeper meanings behind things which only made me love the book more!
This book does contain blood and gore. Language is spread throughout along with the sad/hard realities of being a farmer and dealing with livestock. There's a scene where an animal gets hurt by a truck, but I promise there's a very HEA for the animal! The cast of characters is also thirty plus years which I admire a lot no offense to books with younger cast MCs!
We do have some romance, but it isn't the main focus of the read! Instant attraction on both sides with some tension. Not long lived because it's a short read but Mackenzie has no patience for games. She's a woman who knows what she wants and goes for it! Mackenzie was an excellent character! Eli absolutely loving every part of the sharp witted/tongued woman! Implied MF action but it's closed door.
HEA and I was so thankful for the epilogue! Listen, you're on the edge of your seat by the end of the book praying all will work out! The suspense was fantastic! I cannot wait to read more from this author!
Enjoy the read that's less than two hundred pages set in a small town that may or may not have a supernatural beast haunting it. . . Don't forget to give the author some stars!
