A House in Shadow Author Erica Damon

Book Review

5 out of 5 stars!

"This really would be perfect. His perfect family, their perfect house." - Tristan

Tristan and Allison decide it's time to move to a house out of the city. Tristan picking a small town to get that closeness feel and safety, everyone knowing everyone, and looking out for each other. This will be a great place to raise their daughter!

Only as they settle into their new house odd things keep popping up. Doors slamming, Tristan opening doors that don't lead to the right places, and phantom people. The house can't possibly be haunted! Ghosts don't exist, right?! Allison doesn't believe him and so Tristan will have to battle this on his own.

"He was ready to be done unpacking, and yet with each emptied box, there seemed to be another behind it." - Tristan

I binge read this book in one night! I couldn't put it down especially after reading the ending of part one! This psychological, supernatural, thriller had me so invested and guessing on what was to come next. I really couldn't solve any of this book and I didn't have any theories working in my head as I devoured this.

Moving in or out of a place really stinks! The pile of boxes, the items inside the boxes, the decision of what to take verse what not to, and all the other details of moving! By the time you're done that's it, you don't want to think about moving or packing another box for a LONG while! Tristan and Allison wanted this move mainly for their daughter Dora. Tristan will also have a room dedicated to his office since he works from home.

Like many older houses there are creaks and groans as the house settles. But can you explain off slamming doors and footsteps running down the hall? Tristan tries to rationalize the happenings within the new house. Maybe the occult book he's editing is causing him to see or hear things that aren't actually there? Only when there's a phantom that looks like his daughter but isn't his daughter, he has to take action.

It's hard to review this book because I don't want to give anything away! I loved how many twists were present in the book and just how I was so engrossed! I was excited about the supernatural element to this read and the outcome of what happens with the haunting. I've read from this author before, but this book was wow! I was questioning things and wondering what was behind this or that not being able to fully form a theory.

Tristan was a good character and well written. There were a lot of things that weren't as they seemed. We have dual POVs but the POVs are divided by parts. I will state that nothing happens to Dora, there are tense, heart thumping moments.

Language is present, the adults do try not to say any bad words in front of Dora. We do get some timeline differences which is very cool and helps you to understand things that play out with the story. I will state to check the CWs though they may contain some spoilers. I went in blind because I'm fine with that choice for me. There is some violence and a little bit of gore with one of the scenes. Some medical stuff toward the end of the book may be triggering to some.

This book was very well written and if it ever becomes an audiobook I want to listen! The creepiness of hauntings that leave your hairs on end! I enjoyed the details of the supernatural world. I will say if you do burn sage make sure to leave a window or door cracked. I really loved the darkness of the book and how it all ended. We do get an HEA and I really appreciated the ending for the house!

Do enjoy this read that will have you on the edge of your seat! Don't forget to give the author some stars!
