Murder at Mosswood Lake: A Campfire Crimes Cozy Mystery Author Langley Gray
Book Review
5 out of 5 stars!
"It took me forty-seven minutes, three curse words, and one sideways tip into the freezing lake to arrive at my campsite. If inner peace was what I was seeking, she was clearly playing hard to get." - Delaney
Recently divorced Delaney Moore decided to go find herself in the wilderness. Hey, the brochure was very persuasive! It didn't include the possibility that her first day would be sopping wet and having to try and air dry everything. Or that not all of the campers got the memo about finding tranquility within silence.
The scenic beauty of the lake and surrounding woods is breathtaking. Being away from society and get fresh air and seeing the stars is worth it. But her search for herself may have to be placed on pause when one of the campers is found dead! Suddenly the idea of being alone on an island with strangers isn't appealing. She may just have to put those TV dramas and novels to the test as she tries and uncovers clues! Does anyone know how to speak to animals? They likely saw the whole thing!
Langley Gray has become one of my favorite authors to read novellas from! I love the quick reads that would be great quiet time breaks while on vacation or camping! The peacefulness and quick pace of the books and how they stay on the lighter side of life. I cannot wait to continue diving into this new series with Delaney!
Langley made me realize something with this read that I hadn't thought about and something I dread if I finally get to have a camping trip like this or just a destination vacation. The world of rampant social media is intense, and I find myself disliking videos staged in public more and more. Influencers are so focused on getting "real/authentic" content that they forget or don't care about those around them. Not everyone wants to be made into content for another to profit off of.
Delaney runs into a podcaster who is determined to document his wilderness experience. Making sure to be loud and proud while constantly having commentary that sounds like he's throwing an English degree around. She isn't the only one annoyed by this guy. The other campers aren't thrilled, and their campsite host has no trouble telling the guy when quiet time begins.
"Wonderful. Now I'm trapped with potential murder suspects. Like a wilderness Clue game, but with more granola."
I love how Delaney is fifty-two! Yes, I love my younger MCs, but I very much appreciate when I have older ones! Delaney staying in good shape and not letting life just beat her down. Going out on adventures though after this trip she may call it good. Her monologue did have me chuckling several times! This book didn't have any language. There are moments of genuine fear for safety and wondering if she will be next. Maybe having read other books by Langley I felt a sense of security for Delaney's character so I wasn't too worried about her. Lighthearted, cozy read!
I was caught up in everything and didn't fully figure out whodunit until almost the unmasking. I enjoyed this novella and cannot wait for more within this series! HFN but possibly more to come!
Enjoy the read with amateur sleuthing, an island campsite, and so much granola! And don't forget to give the author some stars!
